No ‘skirt and blouse’ voting, Akufo-Addo tells supporters

President Akufo-Addo says he has been informed that some voters were planning a "skirt and blouse" voting in the Kwesimintsim Constituency

Story Highlights
  • "I have heard some NPP elements saying they will vote 'skirt and blouse' in this constituency. We don't want any "skirt and blouses" in this constituency."

President Akufo-Addo has made a passionate appeal to the people of Kwesimintsim Constituency in the Western Region, to avoid “skirt and blouse voting”, the phenomenon where constituents vote for the presidential candidate of one party and the parliamentary candidate of an opposition party.

Addressing the people of Kwesimintsim, the second stop of his multiple constituency engagements in his one-day tour of the Western Region, President Akufo-Addo said he has been reliably informed that some voters were planning a “skirt and blouse” voting in the Kwesimintsim Constituency come election day.

He therefore admonished that choice would hurt his government’s second term in office if given the nod. He therefore called on the constituents of Kwesimintsim to avoid this at all cost and vote for him and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) parliamentary candidate, Dr. Prince Armah, who is currently the Executive Secretary of National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

Dr. Armah beat the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament for the Kwesimintsim Constituency, Joe Mensah, during the party’s primaries.

“I have heard some NPP elements saying they will vote ‘skirt and blouse’ in this constituency. We don’t want any “skirt and blouses” in this constituency. The Regional Minister, Badu Ansah, and the incumbent MP, Joe Mensah, are all firmly behind the NPP Kwesimintsim parliamentary candidate so I urge you all to do same in unity to get him [Dr. Prince Armah] elected to Parliament,” Akufo-Addo said.

Incumbent MP for Kwesimintsim

The incumbent MP, Joe Mensah, in his public show of support for the man who beat him in the primaries, told the teeming crowd at the rally that before he became the Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, the seat was occupied by an NPP MP and as he prepares to hand over, he will hand over to another NPP MP and none other. He therefore called on constituents to vote massively for Dr. Armah, to ensure that the NPP maintains the Kwesimintsim Constituency seat in Parliament.

Western Region Tour/Itinerary

President Akufo-Addo is in the Western Region on a one-day tour of multiple constituencies as part of the final lap of his election 2020 campaign.

The President’s engagements in the region began with the official commissioning of the Sekondi Astroturf in the Sekondi Constituency.

The team of the President will proceed to Mpohor in the Mpohor Constituency and Agona Nkwanta in the Ahanta West Constituency for whistle stops to address constituents.

The next stop of the President will be Tarkwa in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency where President Akufo-Addo will commission completed infrastructural projects at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). The Prestea Huni Valley Constituency in Bogoso, will be the President’s final whistle stop.
