President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to newly appointed ministers, cautioning them against engaging in illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey.”
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of 14 ministers on Thursday (30 January) President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling illegal mining and announced plans for stakeholder consultations to address the menace.
“No member of this government is allowed to participate in any form of small-scale mining or galamsey. Anyone found engaging in such activities will face swift and severe consequences.
“We plan to hold stakeholder consultations on the galamsey menace to build a broad consensus on the steps needed to protect our environment from further destruction,” he stated.
As part of efforts to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources, President Mahama also revealed that his government would revoke all mining leases granted for operations in forest reserves under the previous administration.
He emphasized that immediate measures would be taken to halt mining activities in these ecologically sensitive areas, with legal action pursued against those responsible for environmental degradation.
