No playlist for Africa has category for rap songs, says Edem

Edem, who is known for his rap songs such as “Heba” and “Only in Ghana”, says it is difficult for hardcore rap songs to be featured on Afrobeats charts on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music

Ghanaian musician Denning Edem Hotor, popularly known as Edem, has said he would always be a singer and a rapper.

According to him, it is difficult for hardcore rap songs to be featured on Afrobeats charts on streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, which coincidentally do not also have playlists specific to African rap.

Edem, who is known for his rap songs such as “Heba” and “Only in Ghana”, also bemoaned the fact that these songs do not get enough radio airplay.

The Volta Regime Music Group (VRMG) boss said all these make it difficult for rappers to strike a balance between trying to maintain their relevance and their artistry.

Edem, however, believes that the rap genre is alive and well and sees no problem with rappers who sometimes release songs in other genres to cope with current trends of music.
