Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General Secretary Samuel Koku Anyidoho has urged the party not to allow any individual to seek its presidential nomination for a third term in office, amid debate over the constitutional limit on presidential tenure.
In a post on X on Sunday (12 July), Anyidoho said the NDC should refuse to sell nomination forms to anyone seeking to use a possible Supreme Court interpretation of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution to contest for the presidency after already serving two terms.
“The NDC shall not be a vehicle for carrying the obnoxious ambition of any individual on a selfish journey of destroying Ghana’s fledgling democracy,” he wrote.
His comments come as the Supreme Court considers a case seeking an interpretation of Article 66(2), with the applicant arguing that the Constitution bars only two **consecutive** presidential terms rather than two terms in total.
The case has sparked political debate over whether a former president could seek office again after leaving power.
Anyidoho said President John Dramani Mahama had already stated publicly that he would not contest the presidency again in 2028, adding that NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey had also rejected suggestions of any third-term agenda.
He argued that even if the Supreme Court were to interpret the Constitution in a way that permitted a former president to contest again after a break in office, the NDC should decline to endorse such a candidacy.
“If the person likes, he or she can form his or her own political party or contest as an independent candidate,” Anyidoho said, arguing that the party should not support what he described as attempts to undermine Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
The Supreme Court has not yet delivered its ruling on the constitutional interpretation.
There has been no indication from President Mahama that he intends to seek another presidential term beyond his current tenure.
