The National Labour Commission (NLC) has instructed members of the University Teachers Associations of Ghana (UTAG) and other teacher unions on strike to return to work pending an emergency stakeholder meeting with the government aimed at resolving the grievances of the teachers.
The order follows a decision by UTAG and the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) to withdraw their service over poor conditions of service on Monday 2 August 2021.
In a letter dated 2 August and signed by Dr Bernice A Welbeck, the director of administration and human resource, the NLC summoned the leadership of the aggrieved teacher unions for deliberations and instructed the union to suspend all strikes.
“The invitation is in accordance with section 139 of the Labour Act 2003, Act 651. The National Labour Commission directs that with this intervention, the Union should stay all action(s) for the parties to appear before the Commission,” part of the letter read.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday 5 August 2021.
