Nii Adjei Sowah: Accra needs a masterplan to make it flood-resilient

Accra and Tema have in the past few days experienced rainstorms leading to destruction of properties including electricity poles and cars

A former Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah is advocating for the creation of a masterplan to make the capital city flood-resilient.

Accra and Tema have in the past few days experienced rainstorms leading to the destruction of properties including electricity poles and cars.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned of stronger winds with rain throughout the month of May across the country.

Speaking to Caleb Ahinakwah on TownHall Talk on Asaase 99.5, on Friday (17 May), Adjei Sowah said getting a masterplan for the city of Accra is crucial.

“…I think that the whole city needs a masterplan, as I speak to you now, there is no masterplan for the city of Accra that any Mayor or government is looking at which shows which path we are charting …”

“So I came to office with the focus of making the city more resilient, safe and sustainable. You have a new Mayor now, I am not pretty sure what her vision is, but if she decides not to continue from where I took off and go another tangent, that might have also derailed a lot of the gains you have made.”

Adjei Sowah added, “You cannot fault her, that is the system we have. And I have been calling for us to have a master plan for the city. So that everybody in the city knows that this is the masterplan and this is where we are going, in this enclave we are building skyscrapers or short buildings.”
