Black Bombers seek Olympic glory at final qualifier in Bangkok

The Black Bombers will be aiming to punch their tickets to Paris and continue the nation's rich boxing legacy

The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has confirmed the Black Bombers’ participation in the final World Olympic Boxing Qualifier scheduled for Bangkok, Thailand, from 23 May to 3 June, 2024.

This comes after the team’s unsuccessful bids at securing qualification for the Paris Olympics through the African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal (September 2023) and the first World Qualifier in Busto Arsizio, Italy (February 2024).

Speaking exclusively to asaaseradio.com, Charles Sergius Jojo Ephson, GBF communication director, emphasised the importance of this final attempt. “It will not be in our interest not to be involved,” Ephson stated. “It’s going to be difficult anyway with regards to whatever we’ve experienced previously, but we are certain of qualifying a few boxers to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

While the exact number of boxers participating in Bangkok remains undecided, the GBF plans to leverage the team’s impressive performance at the recent 13th African Games, where the Black Bombers secured a commendable haul of seven medals (four gold, one silver, and two bronze).

“We are putting ourselves together to use the African Games as a platform to prepare the boxers very well,” Ephson continued.

“The likes of Samuel Takyi, Theophilus Allotey, Amadu Mohammed, and then others who have excelled themselves. So, we will go with some numbers—minimum numbers, of course—to see how best we’ll get them to qualify and go and represent mother Ghana at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, France.”

“For now, we are not certain [of the number we are sending],” Ephson concluded, “but we are going to look at areas that we are certain of qualifying,” he added.

The pressure is on, as missing out in Bangkok would mark the first time since 2004 that Ghana has failed to send boxers to the Olympic Games. The Black Bombers will be aiming to punch their tickets to Paris and continue the nation’s rich boxing legacy.
