Nigeria is mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away this afternoon at a private clinic in London, according to a family statement signed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu.
“The family has announced the passing of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon, in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
The former leader was 82.

Buhari, a retired major general and one-time military ruler of Nigeria, served as the country’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. He was widely known for his strong stance on anti-corruption, national security, and economic reform—although his time in office was also marked by criticism over rising insecurity and concerns about democratic freedoms.
Born in 1942 in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, following a coup. He returned to power through the ballot three decades later in a historic election that marked the first peaceful transfer of power from one civilian government to another in Nigeria’s history.
His health became a subject of public speculation during his presidency, particularly during extended medical visits to the UK.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across Nigeria and beyond. Politicians, religious leaders, and international diplomats have expressed condolences, remembering Buhari as a patriot who devoted much of his life to public service.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, though Islamic tradition suggests burial could take place within 24 hours, potentially in Nigeria, pending family decisions.
