GMA welcomes decision to vaccinate pregnant women

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says medical trials have shown that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe for pregnant women

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has welcomed the decision by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to vaccinate pregnant women against COVID-19.

In an interview with Beatrice Adu on the Big Bulletin on Wednesday (19 January), Dr Titus Beyou, deputy general secretary of the GMA said the process to vaccinate pregnant women has been long overdue.

He said: “That’s a welcome call. The society of physicians and gynaecologists of Ghana has been making this call because data has become available on the safety and efficacy of the MRMA based vaccines in pregnant women.”

“…And we have been making this call and we are happy the ministry has finally amended the policy to allow pregnant women also benefit from the evidence or science that is available now,” he stated.

He encouraged every pregnant woman to be confident in taking the vaccine.

“Any pregnant woman listening to us should be comfortable in going for this vaccine. Because it has been studied, data has been gathered, we’ve had trials in pregnant women and it has shown to be safe. There’s no undesired effect on the mother or the baby as of now. But we do know that if you do get COVID whiles pregnant, the consequences may be great,” he added.

According to the GHS, recent studies across the globe including Ghana show that pregnant women are now safe to take the COVID-19 jab.

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, the director-general of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye said specific vaccines will be administered to pregnant women.

He said the GHS will embark on massive education across the country on vaccinating pregnant women in the coming days.
