Niger restricts Benin registered vehicles from transporting goods through Togo
Only vehicles registered in Niger and Togo, and in exceptional cases, vehicles registered in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, will be allowed to transport goods to Niger through the port of Lomé

A bilateral agreement signed between Niger and Togo, only vehicles registered in Niger and Togo, and in exceptional cases, vehicles registered in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, will be allowed to transport goods to Niger through the port of Lomé.
This de facto excludes trucks registered in Benin and constitutes another point of contention in the tense relations between the two countries.
Since August of 2023, ECOWAS and UEMOA sanctions, the port of Lomé has replaced that of Cotonou as the main gateway for goods transported to Niger through Lomé- Ouagadougou-Niamey.
And despite the lifting of sanctions at the end of last February by ECOWAS, Niger decided to keep this corridor, which was long, expensive and risky.
Since last week, tensions between Niamey and Cotonou have been further exacerbated following the Beninese authorities’ decision to block the removal of Nigerien crude oil intended for export from the port of Sèmè-Podji.
A decision that President Talon justifies by Niger maintaining the closure of its land border. In addition, Niger also suspects Benin of hosting French military bases to destabilise Niger and encourage rebel attacks.
