Niger: 20 soldiers killed and nine civilians injured in terrorist attack

According to the press release from the Nigerien Ministry of National Defense stated that two vehicles were also damaged and dozens of attackers neutralised

Twenty soldiers and one civilian were killed and nine others injured in a terrorist attack against a detachment of the Niger Defense and Security Forces (FDS) on Tuesday (25 June 2024)  in the Tillabéri region.

According to the press release from the Nigerien Ministry of National Defense stated that two vehicles were also damaged and dozens of attackers neutralised.

Following the casualties, the government declared a three-day national mourning across the entire national territory which started on Wednesday (26 June 2024).

The  Minister of National Defense, Lieutenant General Salifou Mody took the opportunity to send condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

He also assured the Nigerien population of “the unwavering will of the defense and security forces to continue the fight for sovereignty”.

For some time now Niger has been faced with an increase in terrorist attacks carried out by Armed Terrorist Groups (GAT), the FDS have intensified military actions which have resulted in the recent suppression of these attacks.

According to the FDS, their military operations continue and will intensify to further  contain all security threats in the area.
