NFA warns TV stations against unauthorised use of creative works
In an official statement, the NFA emphasised that the illegal broadcasting of films, television series, and other audiovisual content violates copyright regulations and threatens the sustainability of Ghana’s creative sector

The National Film Authority (NFA) has expressed serious concerns over the growing trend of unauthorised use and transmission of creative works across television networks in Ghana.
In an official statement, the NFA emphasised that the illegal broadcasting of films, television series, and other audiovisual content violates copyright regulations and threatens the sustainability of Ghana’s creative sector.
According to the Authority, there has been a surge in complaints from both local and international content owners in recent months regarding the unlicensed use of their works on both traditional and digital TV platforms across the country.
“These infringements violate content creators’ rights and discourage investment and creativity in Ghana’s creative industries,” said Kafui Danku Pitcher, Executive Secretary of the NFA.
She reminded broadcasters that the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), clearly outlines the need for permission from rights holders before any public performance or broadcast of copyrighted material. Violations, she noted, are punishable by law.
As the national regulator for the film and audiovisual sector, the NFA stated its commitment to protecting the rights of content creators. It revealed that it is actively collaborating with other regulatory bodies to investigate reported infringements and take necessary actions, which could include suspending or revoking the licences of offending television stations.
The NFA urged all broadcasters to regularise their content by obtaining proper licensing agreements, uphold intellectual property rights, and ensure all films and audiovisual materials are classified before airing.
Additionally, the Authority called on TV stations to legally acquire content, fairly compensate creators, and uphold ethical standards, contributing to a more vibrant and law-abiding creative industry in Ghana.
