EC extends register exhibition exercise to Sunday

The Electoral Commission announces a two-day extension to the timetable for exhibiting the voters’ register

The Electoral Commission has extended the ongoing voter exhibition exercise from Friday 25 September to 27 September.

A statement issued by the Electoral Commission on Wednesday said the move is to give voters more room to participate in the current nationwide exercise.

“As part of efforts to serve its stakeholders and promote greater participation and inclusion, the Electoral Commission has extended the voter register exhibition exercise from 25th September to Sunday 27th September,” the EC said.

Verify registration details

The electoral body believes the extension is crucial to achieve a clean and credible voters’ register in the lead-up to the 7 December presidential and parliamentary elections.

“The Commission is of the view that the extension will allow even more stakeholders to check and verify their voter registration details.” the EC statement said.

“The last day of the exhibition exercise will therefore be Sunday 27th September 2020. We encourage the public to take advantage of the extension by making time to verify their registration.”

The EC advised voters to verify their registration details by visiting their exhibition centres or sending their voter ID numbers to the short code 1422.

The Electoral Commission today also convened an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to brief the political parties about challenges associated with the register exhibition.

The move to meet the parties follows concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress about irregularities and concerns about the ongoing exercise.

The NDC says its concerns have prompted it to suspend the campaigns of both the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, and his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
