We did not snub Parliament, says EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims suggesting that it has refused to honour an invitation to present its road map to Parliament ahead of the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Commission was among three institutions that were expected in Parliament on Thursday (5 November) to brief the House on their preparedness ahead of the December 7 polls.

He said Jean Mensa, the EC chairperson, should be cited for contempt of Parliament.

A statement issued by the EC said “The attention of the Commission has been drawn to an article on social media to the effect that the Commission snubbed Parliament’s invitation to present its road map for a peaceful and successful conduct of election 2020 to the August House”,

According to the statement, the invitation from the legislature was received late on Wednesday (4 November) hence the inability to honour the invitation on Thursday (5 November).

” The Commission is greatly surprised by this turn of events as notice of the said meeting was sent after office hours on Wednesday 4 November 2020. At the time, some commission members were out of Accra and this was communicated to the leadership of Parliament,” the statement said.

The statement said Jean Mensa, chairperson of the Commission has never turned down an invitation from Parliament.

“The Commission and its leadership view Parliament as an important democratic institution and have always fully cooperated with the house. ‘

 The EC says it now fully prepared to present its comprehensive road map report to Parliament on Saturday (7 November).
