VIDEO: Fire guts parts of Republic Hall at KNUST

The fire had destroyed several structures at the market area of the Republic Hall at KNUST in Kumasi

A section of the market area of Republic Hall at KNUST caught fire Saturday evening forcing authorities to evacuate students.

Fire machines were deployed to the scene to douse the flames which had destroyed several structures.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established. It occurred at a time students were returning to campus after spending months at home due to COVID-19.

Reopening of Schools

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday, January 3, announced the reopening of basic, secondary and tertiary institutions across the country.

According to the President, while basic schools were to reopen on January 15, this year, after 10 months’ closure, all SHS 1 students were to start classes from March 10 and do a single-track academic calendar.

For SHS 2 and 3 students, he said, they would return to school from January 18, and added that SHS 3 students in all schools would also no longer run the double-track system.

The President also announced that the universities and other tertiary institutions, would reopen from January 9, 2021.

Fire outbreak on the rise

Domestic fire outbreaks are on the rise in Ghana following statistics of fire outbreaks in 2019 and 2020, which projected 1,822 and 1,910 fires from January to October in both years, respectively.

The domestic fire incidents from January to October, represented 39.63 and 35.67 of total fire outbreaks, respectively in both years.

This was followed by bush fires recording 608 in 2019 and 1,220 in 2020 in the same time periods.

There was an increase of fire outbreaks from January to October 2019 from 4,623 to 5,355 for the same period in 2020.
