V/R: Former deputy YEA director in police grip after allegedly beating girlfriend to death

Philip Cesar Kumah is alleged to have assaulted Elizabeth Yesutor Akpalu on numerous occasions leading to her death on 8 March

Philip Cesar Kumah, a former deputy director of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in the Akatsi North District, is in the grip of the police after allegedly beating his 31-year-old girlfriend, Elizabeth Yesutor Akpalu, to death.

Speaking to Nana Yaa Mensah on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday, Sergeant Prince Dogbatse, public relations officer for the Volta Regional police, said the dead woman had suffered severe abuse by her fiancé for some time.

“She confided in a friend through WhatsApp chat with pictures of physical abuse and mentioned that it is the boyfriend that was responsible for the attack and that she has not been well,” he said.

He added: “So, on Sunday, one of her friends was with her and she showed signs of uneasiness in breathing. They quickly rushed her to the Ho Teaching Hospital [but] about 6am on Monday 8 March, she passed on.”

Sergeant Dogbatse said the boyfriend (Philip Cesar Kumah) is currently in police custody and is assisting with investigations.

He said the police will be able to determine the cause of death after an autopsy.

According to Albert Kuzor, correspondent for Asaase News in the Volta Region, the deceased made complaints to colleagues at the Evangelical Presbyterian University College in Ho, where she was a level 300 student of governance.

She told that she had suffered multiple assaults from her fiancé, who doubles as a student at the same institution.

Further information shows that, before the lady’s death, she had made complaints to her family about numerous assaults by Philip Cesar Kumah.
