Three burnt to death in Anloga Junction road crash

Three occupants of a tricycle have been burnt to death after colliding with a truck at Anloga Junction in Kumasi

At least three persons were burnt to death in a road crash at Anloga Junction in Kumasi late Thursday evening, according to eyewitnesses.

Eyewitnesses said a tricycle, popularly called ‘Pragya’, veered into the lane of a Hyundai vehicle with registration number GC-3897-20 at Oforikrom in the Ashanti Region, killing all three passengers on board when the tricycle caught fire.

“We were standing around the junction when we noticed two people who got down from a bus and entered into the tricycle. The tricycle driver used a one-way road and crashed into a trailer that was coming in the opposite direction with a failed brake. The trailer dragged the tricycle close to where I stood and upon reaching there, the tricycle got engulfed in flames,” an eyewitness, Paa Willie, told Accra-based Citi FM.

He added: “When the trailer driver realized the tricycle was in flames, he reversed the car and got down with his mate. The car has now been towed from the scene and the burnt bodies have also been handed to an ambulance by the police. The fire service arrived after the bodies had been burnt beyond recognition.”

The police are yet to officially comment on the incident.

Pedestrian knockdowns

Available records at the National Road Safety Authority indicate that a total of 5,465 road crashes were reported between January and May 2020, involving 9,163 vehicles, with 958 incidents of pedestrian knockdowns, 909 deaths, and 5,703 injuries.

Compared to the same period in 2019, this year’s situation represented a reduction in cases reported by 5.22 percent, vehicles involved by 2.54 percent, pedestrian knockdowns by 25.5 percent, fatalities by 14.49 percent and injuries by 3.47 percent.

However, there was a 12.64 percent increase in fatalities involving motorcycle users over the same period.

“While the relative reduction is encouraging, the number of fatalities and injuries through road traffic crashes are still high. The Authority cautions drivers to minimize their travel speeds and avoid wrongful overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving tired,” the Authority said on its website.
