Robbers shoot Upper West NPP communication director

The communication director for the New Patriotic Party in the Upper West Region is responding to treatment after suffering gunshot wounds

The communication director of the New Patriotic Party in the Upper West Region has been shot by armed men while returning from a campaign trip to Wa West.

Ali Bukari, who is currently receiving treatment at the Upper West Regional Hospital, was shot twice in the back after he refused to stop, reports Asaase Radio’s Upper West regional correspondent, Ibrahim Muniru.

The incident, he said, occurred on Sunday (8 November 2020) around 5pm between Poyentanga and Bulingin in the Wa West constituency on the Wa-Kumasi road.

Bukari said he is responding to treatment.

“The Wa West campaign team and I went to Balawa from Sirio and a group of three men and I went to another town. We encountered a group of robbers that had already accosted a car. I don’t know what happened to the car,” Bukari told Asaase Radio.

“They stopped me,” he told our reporter. “The moment I started slowing, they shot from the rear and the other one came from the front and ordered me to stop and pointed a gun and shot.

“So, I stopped. And then he cocked again and triggered the gun, and I gathered courage and sped away … Some of the bullets hit me from the back. They have just taken X-ray, so I am waiting for the professionals to tell me what is happening to me. As you can see, I am stable.”

Spate of robberies

Sunday’s incident comes barely a week after gunmen attacked the owner of the Sky Filling Station at Asuodei, in the Ahafo Ano East District of the Ashanti Region.

The region has witnessed a number of daytime robbery attacks in the past few months, raising fears about security.

In July, a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church was robbed and gunned down in Kumasi.

On 12 October, the Ashanti regional director of the Electoral Commission, Benjamin Bannor Bio, was attacked and robbed at gunpoint on the highway between Anwiankwanta and Obuasi while returning from an official trip to the Western Region.
