Passing of Rawlings’s mother, Victoria Agbotui, marks end of an era

Victoria Agbotui, mother of the former president Jerry John Rawlings, dies less than two weeks after celebrating her 101st birthday

The mother of the former president Jerry Rawlings has passed away at the age of 101, reportedly after a long fight with poor health.

She died at home at dawn on Thursday (24 September). Sources close to the family of the former president confirmed her demise. This afternoon the office of the former president also issued a formal announcement of Madam Agbotui’s death.

Victoria Agbotui turned 101 on 9 September.

About Victoria Agbotui

The deceased was born in 1919 and gained attention when her son the former president came to power in 1979.

A native of Dzelukope near Keta in the Volta Region, she became the head of the catering department at the Office of the Presidency while Jerry Rawlings was in power.

She was married to a Scot, James Ramsey John. It is also reported that the former president Rawlings is her only child.

Victoria Agbotui is survived by her son and four grandchildren: Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Yaa Asantewaa Rawlings, Kimathi Rawlings and Amina Rawlings.
