Quartey to MMDAs: Ensure closure of all beaches ahead of Easter festivities

The move is in line with efforts to avert flouting of COVID-19 protocols and also contain the spread of the viral disease during the Easter festivities

Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister has ordered for the closure of all beaches ahead of the Easter festivities until further notice.

The move is in line with efforts to avert flouting of the COVID-19 protocols and also contain the spread of the viral disease during the Easter festivities.

A statement issued and signed by the regional minister said all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) must collaborate with the security agencies to ensure that all beaches from Ada to the coastal boundaries with the Central Region remain closed until further notice.

Arrest and prosecute

It has therefore called on the MMDAs to ensure persons who violate the directives are arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

GMA warns against mass Easter gatherings

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is admonishing government to ban any mass gathering associated with the Easter festivities in a bid to contain the spread of COVID-19.

A statement issued by the GMA said the move is crucial in order to protect the gains made in further reducing the number of cases in the country.

“Mass gathering usually associated with the Easter festivities such as church conventions, picnics, beach parties and other forms of celebrations as usually seen in Kwahu area (enclave) should be strictly prohibited and same enforced by Central Government (through the law enforcement agencies especially the Ghana Police Service) the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as well as traditional authorities,” the GMA statement said.

It added: “It is important for Ghanaians to note that, non-adherence to the COVID-19 preventive measures has the potential to further escalate the spread of the disease in our communities, thereby eroding the moderate gains made so far.”

The GMA is also advising the public to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 protocols since the pandemic is still a major health threat.
