Suhum MP: My driver wasn’t involved in NPP clashes

At least two people sustained injuries in fighting between two rival groups from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Suhum over the weekend

The MP for Suhum, Kwadjo Asante, has denied that his driver was involved in a scuffle which ensued between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a funeral over the weekend.

At least two people sustained injuries in the melee.

“I wish to state categorically that my personal driver was not involved in the case, neither was any cutlass nor implement picked from my car as being alleged in the media,” a statement from the MP said.

But Asante has condemned the action and pledged his commitment to resolving the matter.

“My sympathies are with anyone who may have been adversely affected by the incident and I wish the injured a speedy recovery.

“As a legislator and a law-abiding citizen, I entreat my constituents to exercise restraint as the police investigate the matter, and I pledge to co-operate and support in any way possible [sic] to resolve the situation peacefully,” Asante added.

Condemnation

Alan Kyerematen, the Minister of Trade and Industry, has condemned the violence between NPP supporters at the funeral in Suhum.

In a statement, Kyerematen called for speedy resolution of the differences between the two sides to restore peace and discipline in the party.

“Rumours currently circulating on social media that the clash was between my supporters and those of our Vice-President are not only completely false, but mischievous and have been contrived to bring both the Vice-President and my good self into public ridicule. I condemn without reservation this barbaric act of some members of our great party,” he said.

The statement added: “I believe strongly that any disagreement, whether relating to a contest for position or differences in ideas and opinions, should not be manifested in such violence in a party such as ours. The ideals of our party and tradition call for peaceful and harmonious coexistence and our motto (‘Development in Freedom’), has no place for violence.

“I therefore urge the Suhum constituency executives, the Eastern Regional executives as well as the national executives of the party to take immediate steps to resolve the differences between the two feuding sides to restore peace and discipline in the party.”
