APD 2024: Retain gold to stabilise currency, Ibrahim Mahama tells governments

The founder of Engineers and Planners was speaking at the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) at the Peduase Presidential Lodge in the Eastern Region

African countries must retain most of the gold produced in their respective countries to help stabilise their currencies, business magnate and philanthropist, Ibrahim Mahama has said.

As of the second quarter of 2023, the value of gold exports from Ghana had reached approximately US $1.71 billion. In the full year 2022, around US$6.6 billion of the commodity were exported.

Speaking at the opening of the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogue on Thursday (25 January), Mahama said, “If you know about the volume of gold we produce and we don’t hold that in our vault. [We should do that] and it could help our currency.”

“If we do that, I am sure, that will benefit not only Ghana but it will benefit the sub-region. So what I would propose is that, let’s look within [Africa] and see the talents we have,” Mahama added.

The three-day event ends on Saturday 27 January 2024 and will have as its overarching focus the need to propose concrete measures which will lead to Africans achieving prosperity for the African continent.

The APD, organised in close collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, based in the capital city of Ghana, Accra, will also seek to emphasise the unique opportunity that the AfCFTA offers Africa and her people to break free from the pervasive perceptions of poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment with which the continent is so often associated.
