Ofori-Atta writes to appointments committee of Parliament for new vetting date

The Finance Minister-designate, Ken Ofori-Atta, will be away in the United States for two weeks after developing post-COVID-19 medical complications

Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister-designate for Finance, has written to the chairman of the appointments committee of Parliament requesting that the House reschedule his appointment with the committee, originally fixed for Tuesday 16 February 2021.

In a letter dated 14 February 2021 and addressed to the chairman of the appointments committee, Ofori-Atta said he wished respectfully to bring to the attention of the committee that he would be unable to appear before members as scheduled on Tuesday 16 February 2021.

“I will travel to the United States of America to undergo a required medical intervention currently not available in Ghana. I am expected to be away for two weeks. Therefore, I kindly request your direction on arranging a new date for my appearance before the committee.

“The Ministry of Finance is available to discuss the necessary consequential processes to arrange an alternative date” Ofori-Atta said in his letter to the committee.

The Minister for Finance-designate left Ghana on Sunday 14 February 2021 for the United States to seek medical attention. Speculation was rife on social media today, 15 February 2021, that he had passed away.

However, his personal assistant, Michael Badiako, who is travelling with the minister-designate, announced, producing photo evidence, that Ofori-Atta was alive and in good spirits.

“Good morning, Honourable Minister-designate’s Delta 157 flight has landed,” said a text message from Bediako confirming Ofori-Atta’s safe arrival in the US.

“He is in good spirits. He sends his regards,” the text message concluded.

The message was accompanied by a picture of the minister-designate and his wife sitting in a waiting area of John F Kennedy Airport in New York.
