Late Mfantseman MP’s driver not dead – police clarify

The Central Regional Police Command says that reports circulating about the death of the driver of Ekow Kwansah Hayford, the late MP for Mfantseman, are false

The Central Regional Police Command is urging the public to disregard reports in the media alleging that the driver of the late MP for Mfantseman, Ekow Kwansah Hayford, is dead.

According to the public relations officer of the Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Irene Oppong, the driver, named as Issah Nuruh, has only been transferred from the Catholic Hospital in Mankessim to the Winneba Specialist and Trauma Hospital for further assessment.

“The driver to the late MP, Honourable Ekow Kwansah, is not dead,” DSP Oppong said. “He is on admission at Winneba Trauma Hospital receiving treatment.”

The police further said that another occupant of a passenger vehicle was shot in the chest during the armed attack in the early hours of Friday 9 October.

The passenger was named as Patrick Asante. He, too, has been transferred from the Catholic Hospital in Mankessim to Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and is very much alive.

Ruthless assailants

The police spokeswoman added that doctors have given their assurance that both men are in a stable condition. The police are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all concerned at the health centres, she said.

Ekow Kwansah Hayford, the MP for Mfantseman, was shot dead on Friday 9 October 2020 around 1am by men believed to be armed robbers. The incident happened on the Abeadze Dominase-Abeadze Duadzi-Mankessim road as he was returning from a campaign trip.

The assailants reportedly stopped the five-man travelling party and threatened them. Even though Hayford told them that he was an MP they then went ahead and shot him.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, has dispatched specialised investigators from the homicide and anti-armed robbery units at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters to the Central Region to probe the case.
