Kennedy Agyapong to pay US$150,000 to evacuate Ghanaian women stranded in Lebanon

Over 100 young Ghanaian women stranded in Lebanon are to be evacuated to Ghana. Kennedy Agyapong is offering to help them return home

Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has promised US$150,000 to help fund the evacuation of Ghanaian women stranded in Lebanon.

More than 100 young Ghanaian women have been left stranded in Lebanon by the coronavirus pandemic.

The young women travelled to Lebanon in the Middle East to seek greener pastures but their plight has been worsened as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Kennedy Agyapong responded to their appeal for support after one Matison took a video displaying the plight of the young women in Lebanon and posted it on social media.

Matison explained in the video that, the Lebanese community in Ghana and the owner of Paloma, have contributed and bought some “students” mattresses for them to sleep on in a place offered them by philanthropists.

Speaking on Net2 TV’s The Seat programme 20 July 2020, Kennedy Agyapong said he was responding to their plight with the US$100,000.

“My $100,000 is ready to help them come back home,” he said on the programme.

Later on the programme, Mr Agyapong topped up the US$100,000 initial pledge with an additional US$50,000 to make it a total of US$150,000.

Stranded Ghanaians

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been making plans for Ghanaians stranded abroad to return home.

Many have, however, complained about the cost required of being evacuated successfully to Ghana.

This is because passengers will have to cover the full cost of a 14-day quarantine, which could be extended to 21 days once they are evacuated.

Aside from the stranded Ghanaian women in Lebanon, some footballers in Ethiopia also recently called on the government to help them return home. Fortunately, however, the government and the Ghana Football Association heeded their SOS call and successfully airlifted them to Accra.
