Ashanti ECG staff to Regional Minister: Withdraw police case, apologise to our MD or face our wrath

The dispute arose following a power outage at the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), during Simon Osei-Mensah reportedly made derogatory remarks about the general manager

Staff of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are demanding an apology from Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah for his alleged mistreatment of their boss Ing. Mark Wiafe Asumani.

The dispute arose following a power outage at the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), during which the politician reportedly made derogatory remarks about the General Manager. The Minister allegedly ordered ECG staff to restore power to the university during a revenue mobilization exercise, a directive that was not immediately complied with.

Osei-Mensah, in response, reportedly arranged for the arrest of the general manager, who was subsequently released on self-recognizance bail.

In a statement issued on Thursday (18 April), the joint unions representing ECG staff in the region expressed dissatisfaction with the Regional Minister’s actions, emphasising that ECG does not report to him or take instructions on all activities, including revenue mobilisation.

They have demanded an unqualified apology from the Regional Minister to the general manager and the entire ECG. They have also called for the withdrawal of the case from the police station by Tuesday (23 April), threatening further action if their demands are not met.

The staff have indicated that if the Regional Minister does not comply, they will raise red flags and dress in red as a symbol of their displeasure on Wednesday (24 April).
