Mensa Anamua Otabil is a Ghanaian theologian, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and founder of the International Central Gospel Church, headquartered in Accra.
The 63-year-old will always make the list of notable Ghanaians who were born in Ghana and impacting society through their works.
His work has centered on issues relevant to Africa, although he has spoken internationally at various conferences and churches.
Here are a list of four interesting things you probably didn’t know about him:
1. Emergence of ICGC
The International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) is an evangelical, charismatic Christian church. It was officially inaugurated as a church on 26 February 1984, in Accra, Ghana.
The first meeting was held in a small classroom with an initial membership of just about 20 people. Today, ICGC can boast of tens of thousands membership with over 450 assemblies (branches) in Ghana, Europe, USA, and some African countries.
2. Awards and recognition
In March 2018, Otabil made it onto the list of the 100 Most Reputable Africans. The list also featured individuals from diverse sectors, including leadership, entertainment, advocacy, education, and business.
In 2015, Ghanaians voted him the “Most Influential Person in Ghana”, according to a list published by ETV Ghana.
3. Founder of Central University
Mensa Otabil is the founder of Central University established in 1998, which was formerly known as Central Bible College in June 1991. The school later became the Central Christian College in 1993.
Central University has eight faculties/schools, namely the Central Business School (CBS), the School of Architecture and Design (SADe), School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), Faculty of Law(FOL), School of Pharmacy(SOP), School of Engineering and Technology (SET) and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS).
In January 2016, the University College received the long-awaited Presidential Charter to become an autonomous and fully-fledged university as Central University.
4. Married for 37 years
Otabil married his wife, Joy, in 1986 and they currently have four children: Sompa, Nhyira, Yoofi and Baaba Aseda.
He has been married to Joy Otabil for 37 years.
