APC will not contest Ejisu by-election, says Hassan Ayariga

The by-election follows the unfortunate passing of the Member of Parliament (MP), John Kumah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who died on Thursday (7 March)

Hassan Ayariga, founder and chairman of the All People’s Congress (APC), has announced that his party will not be presenting a candidate for the upcoming Ejisu by-election, scheduled for Tuesday (30 April).

The by-election follows the unfortunate passing of the Member of Parliament (MP), John Kumah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who died on Thursday (7 March), at the age of 45 after battling illness.

Ayariga conveyed his party’s condolences during an interview on Asaase Radio’s Big Bulletin on Tuesday (9 April), expressing solidarity with the NPP’s loss and their decision not to field a candidate in the by-election.

“We believe that the incident is tragedy and we don’t believe that it is an opportunity for any political party or anybody else to contest for that seat,” Ayariga said.

“The reason why we are not putting a candidate [is] we want to leave the seat and the space for the NPP to put a candidate,” he added.

“We are sympathising with the NPP and not [presenting] a candidate for the election now; that is our point, that is our stance.”
