Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has announced plans by the government to roll out a new digital payment system, mainly for workers in the creative industry.

Bawumia announced the initiative on Thursday (15 February) at a meeting with the celebrated actor Idris Elba and his team at Jubilee House in Accra.

The meeting focused on financial inclusion for Ghanaā€™s creative arts and devising strategies to integrate Ghanaian creatives into the worldwide financial ecosystem.

Sharing the news on X, the vice-president commended Idris Elba for his commitment to developing the African creative arts economy.

ā€œToday, I met with celebrated actor,@idriselba and his team, and we had a meaningful dialogue on the dynamic and expanding creative arts economy of Africa,ā€ the vice-president said. ā€œOur focus was on the financial inclusion of Ghanaian creative arts and devising strategies to integrate them into the worldwide financial ecosystem.

ā€œMany African industry players are locked out of the global payments ecosystem and we therefore discussed the proposed implementation of a new system leveraging blockchain technology to assist them and ensure that they get paid for their music and arts no matter where in the world it is used commercially.

ā€œGiven Ghanaā€™s relatively advanced system of digital payments, the new system is expected to be launched in Ghana later this year,ā€ Dr Bawumia wrote. ā€œMy thanks to Idris Elba for his commitment to the development of the African creative arts economy.ā€
