GSS launches gender-based violence and sanitation apps

The app can be downloaded from the Google Play store or accessed using the mobile short code *800*818#

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has launched two mobile applications, “Let’s Talk” and “CleanApp Ghana”, in the Ningo-Prampram District to collect data on gender-based violence and sanitation respectively.

Alex Boateng, the assistant statistician for the district, stated that the it is among the 30 districts selected for citizen-generated data collection using the app.

He said with the app, his outfit will be able to collect relevant information on the two critical issues.

The assistant statistician added that there is little information to facilitate policy formulation and progress reporting on gender-based violence and sanitation.

Abigail Miwornunyie, a member of the technical team for the implementation of apps in the district, demonstrated how the “Let’s Talk” app works. She said it can be downloaded from the Google Play store or accessed using the mobile short code *800*818#.

Miwornunyie encouraged the public to report cases of gender-based violence. She said the app operates under the Data Protection Act 2012 (Act 843) and the Statistical Service Act 2019 (Act 1003).

Sexual harassment

She said that gender-based violence such as sexual harassment, physical assault, denial of basic needs, restriction of movement, sexual assault and rape can be reported using the app.

The report can be sent via text or audio in different languages. The app also has toll-free numbers for relevant institutions like the police.

Samuel Amey, a statistical planning officer at the Ghana Education Service and a technical member of the implementation team, urged residents to use the shortcode *920*58# or the “CleanApp Ghana” app to report sanitation issues to the district assembly and service providers.

He said reports that have pictures attached will help to provide information on the nature of the problem for long-term solutions.

He urged residents to report non-collection of refuse, both household and communal waste bins, using the app or code.

Bernard Mats Yingura, the Ningo-Prampram District co-ordinating director, who launched the apps, said data collection helps in shaping policies to improve the situation on gender-based violence and sanitation issues in the district.

He urged assembly and unit committee members in the district to own the project and sensitize their community members on the importance of collecting the data.

Al-Latiff Tetteh Amanor, the Ningo-Prampram District chief executive, commended the GSS for introducing the apps. He said it will help solve data-related challenges; an area of concern for his outfit.
