PFAG channels share of COVID funds to player welfare

The Professional Players Association (PFAG) says it will put its allocation of coronavirus relief funds into supporting Division One and the women’s game

The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) will commit its share of the COVID-19 relief funds from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to the insurance of Division One and Women’s Premier League players.

The decision was confirmed by Augustine Arhinful, a member of the association.

Speaking on the subject, the former Ghana international explained that PFAG’s decision was influenced by the premium it places on the welfare of its members.

“PFAG’s priority is the welfare of active and inactive players but not necessarily money,” Arhinful told Light FM.

Interest in welfare

“We had a friendly meeting with the FA on our apportioned FIFA COVID-19 relief fund and told them to insure the Division One clubs and women footballers, because we have already insured the Premiership teams which have been renewed for the next two years,” Arhinful said.

“We haven’t rejected the money but our interest in the welfare of the clubs and their players is why we are asking for these funds to be used for such purposes.

The former Borussia Dortmund player further said that PFAG is doing much behind-the-scenes work and saving money to solve problems with player salaries.

“PFAG does a lot of things which are unknown to the public. We have accumulated over $7 million to free up player-owing and … other issues,” he said.

The Ghana Football Association last week sent out a manual to its constituents on how it intended to disburse the COVID-19 stimulus package from FIFA and CAF.

In the manual, the GFA allocated US$2,000 for PFAG as its share of the total $1.8 million (€1.6 million) package for Ghana.
