The Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia calls on all alumnae of the University of Ghana to contribute to the one laptop one student initiative

Story Highlights
  • "I fully support this very laudable initiative by the vice-chancellor. She’s doing something that’s very dear to my heart which is digitalising the process and making sure that every student has access to one laptop. And so, I challenge all the alumnae to at least provide one alumna one laptop for the students."

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice-President has pledged to support the University of Ghana’s one student one laptop initiative with 100 laptops.

According to him, this is to help support the modernisation of teaching and learning across the country.

Speaking at an award ceremony organised by the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) to give laptops to some needy but brilliant students, themed; “Supporting the needy student in the new virtual learning environment,” Bawumia called on all alumnae of the university to contribute to the initiative.

“I fully support this very laudable initiative by the vice-chancellor. She’s doing something that’s very dear to my heart which is digitalising the process and making sure that every student has access to one laptop. And so, I challenge all the alumnae to at least provide one alumna one laptop for the students.

“I will want to say that I’m moved by this initiative and I’m also going to knock on some doors. I am also going to commit in providing at least, initially this one student one laptop initiate with a 100 laptops,” Bawumia stated.

On her part, Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana said the initiative has become necessary as the university transitions to modernise teaching and learning in a new normal.

“It is a glaring fact that with the advent of COVID-19, the virtual mode of teaching and learning has been mainstreamed. This mode which is technology-driven requires students, staff and faculty to have access to personal/handheld smart devices.

“This initiative is therefore very timely and thoughtful, targeted at the most vulnerable within the community who could potentially be disadvantaged due to their inability to acquire such devices to facilitate their studies,” she stated.
