97% of West Mamprusi connected to national grid

The West Mamprusi Municipality has connected123 out of 126 communities to the national grid, leading to the enhanced growth of small-scale businesses

Four communities in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region have been connected to the national electricity grid.

The minister of gender, children and social protection and the MP for the Walewale Constituency, Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera, commissioned the project in the four communities 11 April.

The four communities are Gubiu, Zorantinga, Nava and Kukuazugu.

The assembly has connected a total of 123 out of 126 communities to the national grid. This will enhance the growth of small-scale businesses and improve the rate of employment.

Out of the three communities left, two (Kpatusi and Boayini) have been connected to the national grid but are yet to receive electricity metres. The Moatani community is yet to be connected to the national electricity grid.

The municipal chief executive, Issahaku Arimeyaw Somo Lucky Basintale, said the remaining communities will be connected to the national electricity grid before the end of 2023.

He said, “Apart from Kpatusi and Boayini which have no metres for now, and Moatani which hasn’t connected to the national grid, there is no community in West Mamprusi without electricity.”

Speaking on the side-lines with the minister during the commissioning ceremony, she stated that through the vice president and the energy minister, work on the extension of electricity to individual households will be carried out across the municipality.

She said, “We have had a lot of extension challenges since Nkrumah’s time. That hasn’t seen any improvement.

“So, we are now working on the extension. Insha Allah, with the help of the vice president and the ministry of energy, we are coming to do the extension and I am so happy about that.

“Very soon, we will see the extension within the Walewale Municipality.”
