Government to partner private sector to build infrastructure against climate change

The Minister for Finance says the private sector participation in driving low carbon activities will help generate more jobs for Ghanaians

The government says it is collaborating with the private sector to leverage the country’s natural resources to fund a sustainable transition to a low carbon economy.

Delivering the government’s 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy in Parliament on Wednesday (17 November 2021), Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister for Finance noted that the private sector participation in driving low carbon activities will help generate more jobs for Ghanaians.

“Mr Speaker, having launched our updated Nationally Determined Contributions at the recently ended COP26, Ghana has reaffirmed its readiness to leverage its natural resources to fund a sustainable transition to a low carbon economy. This will be done by facilitating private sector participation in low carbon activities and industries in a manner that generates more jobs for Ghanaians and improves our general wellbeing,” he stated.

According to the minister, the government is committed to promoting climate adaptation action, as it seeks to collaborate with the Global Centre on Adaptation, in close collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), in pioneering solutions on how to build durable infrastructure, and support African cities to guard against the impacts of climate change.

He further indicated that “we are also working with the private sector, and with the assistance of the Green Climate Fund, to establish a multi-million-dollar Green Fund to support our climate adaptation interventions,” he added.
