Resource Special Prosecutor to function effectively, says Azeem

The anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem says the government has not demonstrated political will in funding the OSP

Anti-corruption campaigner, Vitus Azeem has said the government’s inability to release funds for the proper running of the Office of Special Prosecutor is a major stumbling block to the fight against corruption in Ghana.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday released its half yearly report detailing activities, innovations and steps taken to curb corruption-related offences in the country.

The report called on the government to provide adequate support and funding and the assurance of protection for its staff to perform their functions devoid of unjustifiable recrimination.

Reacting to the development on Asaase 99.5 Accra on Monday (15 August), Azeem said the government has not demonstrated political will in funding the OSP.

“For me the main stumbling block is the support from the president and his finance minister,” the anti-graft campaigner said. “The Special Prosecutor needs resources, he needs clearance to recruit staff, open regional offices to help him in his work, and without the clearance that is not going to happen.”

“For example, when Col Kwadwo Damoah was speaking he spoke of a staff of his that the SP wanted and he didn’t agree and so forth. The Special Prosecutor should not be begging for public officers from other institutions,” he said.

Azeem added: “He should be given the clearance and authority to recruit those that he wants so that he can advertise and adopt a transparent approach of recruiting the required staff. So, I think that should be the main thing, the political commitment of  the president and his finance minister.”
