Botchway to artists: Emulate Bob Marley by using music to unite Ghanaians

The head of the history department at the University of Cape Coast wants musicians to emulate reggae legend Bob Marley by uniting the country with music

  • “Some of our artists, especially our musicians and actors, this is the kind of example they can emulate and not take political sides. When it comes to nation building, they should become statesmen, they should become non partisans, just as Bob Marley did."

Prof De-Valera Botchway, head of the History Department at the University of Cape Coast has called on Ghanaian musicians to emulate reggae legend Bob Marley by using their work to unite Ghanaians instead of creating division.

Speaking to Kojo Mensah on The Asaase Breakfast Show, Prof Botchway said musicians have a major role to play in uniting a nation.

“Some of our artists, especially our musicians and actors, this is the kind of example they can emulate and not take political sides. When it comes to nation building, they should become statesmen, they should become non partisans, just as Bob Marley did.”

“And to use their arts, to use their talents to unify Ghanaians, to unify Africans instead of taking sides and causing divisions. Bob Marley didn’t do that, and I think we can learn a lot from him.”

He said most of the challenges confronting the country could be fixed if we accept justice as the greatest value to foster peace and development in Ghana.

Speaking on the same show, Kabral Blay-Amihere, a former Ghana Ambassador to Sierra Leone said Bob Marley’s ideals are still relevant today.

“When you look at where we are today, I will say that all of us should operate by the philosophy that when you are called by the maker, what impact would you have made, what legacy would you have left,” he said.

“And I think if people can see in Bob Marley a model and example of what we should use our God-given talent to give back to society, we will be a better society. If you are in politics, why are you in politics, are you in politics to enrich yourself or to improve the lives of people… and I think that is what is missing,” he added.
