Kumasi: Police save alleged kidnapper from lynching

The suspect Michael Agyeman was nearly lynched by locals of Patasi when he attempted to kidnap a five-year-old girl

A man was nearly lynched on Tuesday by an angry mob who accused him of attempting to kidnap a five-year-old girl.

A police patrol team dispatched to Patasi, where the incident occurred, rescued the suspect, Michael Akwasi Agyeman, who sustained multiple injuries during the attack.

The Ashanti Region police spokesperson ASP Godwin Ahianyo who confirmed the incident to reporters said the suspect is in custody.

“Again on Tuesday 24 August, the regional information command centre had information that a certain young man had attempted to kidnap a five-year-old girl at Patasi in Kumasi and was being lynched.

“A police patrol team was dispatched to the scene and met suspect Michael Akwasi Agyeman aged 24 with multiple wounds on his body. He was rescued and brought to the regional CID for questioning,” the spokesperson said.

ACP Ahianyo added: “The suspect during questioning admitted the offence and mentioned one Eric as the one who contracted him to kidnap the said child. He, however couldn’t lead the police to arrest the said Eric. As we speak the victim is very well and has reunited with the mother.”

He said efforts are underway to arrest the accomplice.
