Draw for 2025 AFCON preliminary round set for 20 February

8 nations are set to compete for the 4 spots available for the Group Stage

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed the date for the eagerly awaited preliminary draw of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Morocco. Scheduled for Tuesday (20 February), at 12:00 GMT, the draw will take place in Cairo, Egypt.

The preliminary stage of the tournament will feature the participation of the eight lowest-ranked teams according to FIFA rankings. Among these teams are Somalia, Djibouti, São Tomé and Príncipe, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia, and Eswatini.

The draw will see the lowest-ranked of the eight (Somalia, Djibouti, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Chad) placed in Pot 1, while Pot 2 will be home to the highest-ranked of the eight (Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia, and Eswatini).

Matches during the preliminary round will adhere to a home-and-away format, with fixtures set to be played within the FIFA Window of 18–26 March, 2024. Following these encounters, four (4) victorious teams will advance to join the 44 exempt teams for the subsequent group stage.
