Gas explosion kills two in Central Region, eight others in critical condition

The explosion happened at a local gold refinery when a gas cylinder two workers had just collected from a vendor after refilling caught fire

Two people have been confirmed dead in a gas explosion at Denkyira-Akwaboso in the Denkyira West District of the Central Region.

The explosion took place at a local gold refinery after a gas cylinder the two workers had just taken back from a vendor after refilling it caught fire, killing both workers instantly.

Eight other workers who sustained severe injury have been transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Four others who suffered minor injuries are recuperating at the Dunkwa Government Hospital.

Four houses close to the gold refinery were also burned down in the explosion.

The people harmed in the explosion were all male.

Confirming the incident, the district co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Sulley Godfred, said: “I had a call that such a thing had happened, so we did all the necessary things. When I got there, I could see human flesh scattered around. It was serious and I don’t know how it came about.

“Even at a hundred metres away you could see human flesh around,” he said.

Speaking with Asaase’s Central Region correspondent, Godfred said: “They had earlier sent someone to go and fill the gas cylinder from the district capital, so the information we gathered was that as soon as the guy returned, they started using it and I think that’s what caused the explosion.”
