Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings – His life in photos

We walk you through the life of the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, mostly referred to as "Papa J", in photos

The sudden death of former Ghanaian president, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, mostly referred to as “Papa J”, barely three weeks after burying his centenarian mother, Victoria Agbotui, has left the country saddened.

It was business as usual on Thursday (12 November) until the peaceful midmorning was interrupted with the news of the death of the first president of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. Normal programming on the airwaves was truncated as the nation received details of his passing at the hospital.

Rawlings, 73, spent close to two decades – 11 as a military ruler and eight as a democratic leader – at the highest office of the nation. He handed over power peacefully to his political rival J.A. Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on 7 January, 2001.

It was under his tenure that the country birthed the 1992 Constitution, which is still in existence as the highest law in Ghana.

Below is a gallery of photos highlighting the life of the towering leader once called ‘Junior Jesus’.
