The Builsa Traditional Council in Sandema in the Upper East Region has placed restrictions on the organisation of musical events popularly known as jams for candidates writing this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the area.
The Traditional Council also announced a ban on the organization of after-parties for candidates, noting the new measures are to help curb the increasing rate of teenage pregnancies, accidents, thefts, drug and substance abuse in the area which are characteristic of such events.
“I wish to state unequivocally that there shall be no holding of get-togethers and jams within the Buluk Traditional Area this year 2022.
This is to avoid the many bad incidences that characterise these programmes some of which include teenage pregnancies, fierce fights and injuries, thefts and drug/substance abuse, among others.” The Overlord of the area, Nab Azagsuk Azantilow said in a statement.
While warning it would not tolerate any contravention of the restriction, the Traditional Council called on the local authorities particularly the education directorates in Sandema and Fumbisi to help enforce the new measures.
The Traditional Council expressed firm hope the enforcement of the measures would help to curb social vices in the area.
“It is my firm belief that together we can all help keep safe our lovely young pupils from danger that these events bring”.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Sandema Nab, Pontius Pilate Apaabey Baba, has said the ban is the first of a wave of measures to be rolled out by the traditional council to check indecent behaviour among the youth in the area.
Apaabey said the traditional council was committed to the proper upbringing of young people, assuring it would do whatever is within means to support the youth in that regard.
He appealed to the local government authorities in the area to enact bylaws to encourage decent behaviour and discipline among the youth.
