At least 22 persons have been arrested by the police at Kwahu Obomeng in the Eastern Region for allegedly holding a gay wedding over the weekend.
The suspects who were rounded up on Sunday upon a tip-off include six men, security sources have disclosed.
Reports suggest the suspects denied engaging in same-sex marriage for two women, saying the event was a birthday party. They have since been bailed pending further investigations.
The bride in question is reported to have acquired the venue for the event for various Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQI+) and prostitution activities.
The incident is coming barely a month after police in Accra closed down a community centre belonging to the LGBT+ Rights Ghana group in Accra.
Office closure
Last month personnel believed to be national security operatives close down LGBTQI community space in Accra .
The LGBT+ Rights Ghana group called on human rights organisations to condemn the raid.
“This morning our office was raided by National Security. A few days ago traditional leaders threatened to burn down our office but the police did not help,” it said.
It added “At this moment, we no longer have access to our safe space and our safety is being threatened. We call on all human rights organisations, and allies to speak out against these attacks and hate crimes we are being subjected to.”
I won’t allow same-sex marriage
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated that same-sex marriage will never be lagalised under his watch.
“I have said it before, and let me stress it again, that it will not be under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legalised in Ghana,” the president stressed at the installation of the 2nd Archbishop of the Anglican Church at St Michael and All Angels Cathedral at Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region on Saturday 27 February.
