COVID-19: Akufo-Addo speaks tonight as third wave looms

At least 423 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) pushing the country’s active cases to 4,094

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to outline some new measures to contain the recent hike in COVID-19 cases in Ghana.

Tonight’s 26th Update on COVID 19 is also expected to touch on some initiatives being rolled out to avert a third wave following the detection of the Delta variant in the country.

Ghana has in the past few weeks witnessed a surge in new infections raising fears the country is on the verge of a third wave.

The Noguchi Institute for Medical Research said the Delta variant was detected in samples as early as April, just after the start of the vaccination campaign against COVID-19.

The Delta variant, a big factor in the upsurge in India, spreads much more quickly and with deadlier effect than Alpha, the variant previously rampant in parts of Europe and North America.

Noguchi said that asymptomatic carriers of COVID who are not respecting the safety measures may be helping innocently to spread the disease to the vast majority of the Ghanaian population that has not yet been vaccinated.
