Afenyo-Markin’s appointment doesn’t equate to NPP victory in Central Region, says Bannor

the head of research at the Danquah Institute (DI) says it takes more than just appointing a Majority Leader who hails from the Central Region to win the trust of the people of the Central Region

Dr Frank Bannor, the head of research at the Danquah Institute (DI), has this decision by the NPP to select Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Effutu as Majority Leader was not solely based on geographical representation

He said the move was rather aimed at bolstering the party’s efforts in the Central Region.

Speaking on the the Forum on Asaase 99.5, on Saturday (24 February), Bannor said the focus lies on ensuring that the NPP fulfils its commitments to the people of the Central Region rather than merely appointing a leader from that area.

“I see it to be not really about appointing a leader who hails from the Central Region, but then it’s about the NPP as a party getting to do the right things in the Central Region,” he said.

He highlighted the importance of assessing the party’s performance and delivery on promises made to the region since 2016.

Bannor urged for introspection within the party’s ranks, emphasising the need to evaluate their track record and address any shortcomings in fulfilling pledges to Central Region constituents.

“If you are using a tracker or you are using an indicator to measure performance and output in terms of promises made to the good people of the Central Region, how will the NPP score itself with the Central Region? That is one of the critical questions that we should be asking ourselves, and the leadership of the NPP and the majority leadership should also be asking themselves.”

Bannor reiterated that while having a Majority Leader from the Central Region holds significance, it alone does not guarantee electoral success.

He stressed the necessity for a comprehensive strategy beyond symbolic appointments, emphasising the importance of pragmatic steps in candidate selection and engaging with the electorate.

“I think that the fact that you appoint a Majority Leader from Central Region does not necessarily give you that leverage that you are going to maybe retake or recover all that maybe you might have missed out or lost out in the Central Region,” remarked Bannor.

“It takes more than just appointing a Majority Leader who hails from the Central Region to win the trust of the people of the Central Region, and as I said earlier, there has to be a systematic step; there have to be pragmatic steps in terms of the selection of parliamentary candidates in the Central Region.”
