Foster Ansong-Bridjan, head of operations of the Ghana Ambulance Service, wants government to as a matter of urgency fast track the provision of personal insurance for drivers under the service.
Speaking to Nana Yaa Mensah on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (12 February) Ansong-Bridjan described the recent armed robbery attack on one of its drivers as unfortunate.
According to him, the incident has generated fear among drivers of the Ambulance Service.
Ansong-Bridjan noted although the drivers are under the workman compensation, that alone is not enough.
Talks underway
“At the moment we don’t have any other insurance for the personnel, we have made a case to the ministry of health to look at the possibility of insuring all the personnel because of the risk involved in the work they do,” he said.
Ansong-Bridjan added: “So we are in talks with the ministry hoping that with this latest incident in mind, something will be done to ensure that all the personnel who have put their lives in line of this kind of duty, the risk involve in saving the lives of Ghanaians will be adequately insured with some personal insurance scheme so that in case of such unfortunate incident they will be adequately compensated.”
Ansong-Bridjan revealed the service has already begun the process to compensate the family of the late ambulance driver.

Armed robbers on Thursday (4 February 2021 ) attacked and shot Abraham Tetteh, an ambulance driver who was conveying a pregnant woman to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.
It is believed that the ambulance with registration Number GV 644-20 bumped into a robbery operation on the Akuase Somanya road while speeding but the robbers opened fire on the driver and shot him in the head.
He was conveying a pregnant woman in labour from the Akuase Government Hospital to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.
