D-Black: Scrap GHAMRO now, it’s bogus

The musician says the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has been ineffective over the years

Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, known in showbiz as D-Black, has called for the immediate scrapping of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO).

Regulated by the Ministry of Justice, GHAMRO is mandated with the collection and distribution of royalties on behalf of authors, composers and other rightsholders.

The hip-pop and Afrobeat musician believes the organisation has been ineffective in discharging its duties hence the meagre revenue to musicians as royalties over the years.

Speaking to Naa Ashorkor on Between Hours on Asaase Radio on Thursday (28 October), the musician said he has only received GHC600 from GHAMRO in the past five years.

“I think they [GHAMRO] should be shut down and new entity should be brought on board. Everybody should be making revenue off the music industry from the writers to the producers to the artiste themselves and even to the DJs,” D-Black said.

He added: “I think they should sack everybody at GHAMRO and Copyright Society of Ghana (COSGA), shut them  down and bring in professionals, if they have to come outside the country. They are not professionals, if they are, they will not be giving flat rate to artistes.”
