Rescue operation ends

Meanwhile, a search-and-rescue operation at the collapsed church building has come to an end.

Rescue workers combed through rubble as they searched for 62 worshippers said to have been praying in the five-storey, uncompleted building at the time of its collapse on Tuesday (20 October 2020).

Hopes of anxious relatives of the victims have been dashed as a stench has begun to rise from the rubble.

Officials say a full-blown investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the accident and bring those responsible to book.
