#SafeMotorway4All: Ghana’s road design needs an overhaul, says NRSA boss

Ghana's current road designs, Adonteng said, do not take into consideration the safety of pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles

The acting director of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) Ing David Osafo Adonteng has said the road designs of Ghana must be looked at again to ensure optimum safety, especially for pedestrians.

Ghana’s current road designs, Adonteng said, do not take into consideration the safety of pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles thereby contributing to carnage on the roads.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (15 May), Adonteng said: “I think that if you look at our road designs, we have completely ignored cycling or lanes for cycling, so it is not motivating people to use cycles.”

“Even in recent times, if you look at the upsurge of motorcycles, we don’t have lanes for them,” he added. “So, they are conflicting with vehicles and creating all sort of problems.”

“I think this is the time for us to now go back, rethink on our road design standards and begin to introduce some of these facilities and dedicate space within our road corridors to have cycle lanes, pedestrian walkways and lanes for cycles,” Adonteng added.
