Wey Gey Hey old girls applaud Akufo-Addo for nominating member as new Chief Justice

The announcement of the nomination comes in anticipation of the retirement of Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah from the bench on 24 May 2023

The Wesley Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association has applauded President Akufo-Addo for nominating an old girl of the school as Ghana’s new Chief Justice.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo nominated Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Gertrude Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, as the next Chief Justice.

The president on 25 April 2023, in a letter he signed, informed the Council of State about his decision to nominate Justice Torkornoo, and impressed on the Council to expedite action on the nominee, for onward submission to Parliament for approval, in conformity with Article 144 (1) of the 1992 Constitution.

When she gets the nod from Parliament, the 60-year-old Justice Torkornoo will become the countryā€™s third female Chief Justice, following the footsteps of Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.

Reacting to the news of Justice Torkornoo’s nomination, who is an old student of school in a statement dated April 26, 2023, the national president of the association, Effie Simpson, said: ā€œHer nomination is an addition to the long list of accomplishments registered by products of the school in several fields (locally and internationally) – a firm testament to the high educational standards associated with Wesley Girls’ since its establishment 186 years ago.ā€

She congratulated Justice Torkornoo on her nomination whilst encouraging her to ā€œbring to the position, the rich tradition of academic excellence that WGHS is famous for.ā€
