African churches push for climate adaptation ahead of COP 28

Churches in Africa are helping those affected by recent floods. They also have opinions on steps world leaders should take at COP 28 next week.

Several African countries in East Africa, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi and Malawi, have been recently hit with severe flooding, with over a million displaced people and over 100 death casualties.

The East African region has been suffering from extended drought, which has led to millions being displaced and food shortages. The floods have only worsened the situation in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

Rev. Titus Bere Komara, a Lutheran pastor in Tana Delta and Dean of the Coast Region of the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church, says, “the situation is at the worst because the waters have spread to all areas. It is still raging and approaching towns…but many people are heeding our call, following instructions and evacuating to safety.”

Another pastor, Rev. Nicta Lubaale, general secretary of the Organization of African Instituted Churches, says regarding climate adaptation, “The key issue is resources for adaptation. He said these must be given as grants, not loans.

He uses a metaphor to illustrate the need for community assistance: “If you recklessly drive and crash into someone’s house, do you then loan them the money to repair it?”

This year’s COP which will be commencing next week, should see world leaders actually addressing the protocols that were agreed upon in the Paris Agreement which was the 21st COP done in 2015.

COP 28 must build on the African Climate Summit’s Nairobi Declaration, recognizing Africa’s 40% share of renewable energy resources and vast carbon sinks.

Africa’s natural capital can help reduce global carbon emissions. Its untapped renewable energy potential can make it a key player in the fight against climate change as an industrial hub.
